Local events mark World AIDS Day
From the Portsmouth Heral News
AIDS Response Seacoast, an AIDS service organization that has served Seacoast residents since 1988, is teaming up with Ethan Zohn, winner of “Survivor: Africa,” and a wide range of Seacoast area nonprofits to host an event to mark World AIDS Day.
The event will take place at 7 p.m. this Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 22 Fox Run Road, Newington. Zohn is a former professional soccer player and founder of Grassroots Soccer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating at-risk youth in Africa about preventing the spread of HIV.
The program will also feature a 22-year-old former Seacoast-area resident who has been living with HIV since the age of 7.
In addition, the program will feature musical guests, a display of three panels from the AIDS Quilt, a candlelight vigil, and an award for outstanding contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Co-sponsors include CARE, Sexual Assault Support Services, A Safe Place, Seacoast Gay Men, Gay Men Fight AIDS, University of New Hampshire Health Services, the Feminist Health Center of Greenland, The Names Project Northern New England Chapter, Seacoast Outright and ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History.
Leading into World AIDS Day, AIDS Response and UNH Health Services will present a showing of “Rent” at 3 p.m. Thursday, and a showing of “A Closer Walk,” with opening remarks by Zohn, who is also featured in the film, at 3 p.m. Friday. Three panels from the AIDS Quilt will be on display both days in the Memorial Union Building at UNH.
