Via a Program Involving Renowned International Soccer Players and Coaches, GolTV and Grassroot Soccer Will Get the Ball Rolling for Others to Participate

NORTH BAY VILLAGE, Fla., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ — With the upcoming observance December 1st of World AIDS Day, GolTV has joined the crusade with Grassroot Soccer — a foundation created in March 2002 by Ethan Zohn and Dr. Thomas Clark that brings soccer and its star players into play to teach African children how to lead healthy lives, ones unaffected by AIDS.

Ethan, a celebrated winner of the reality show “Survivor: Africa,” has a strong link to the African continent, since he played soccer in Zimbabwe and lived in close proximity to the devastating effects of AIDS. In fact, some of his friends and teammates have fallen victims to this disease.

For this reason, and in recognition of World AIDS Day, GolTV has prepared a special highlighting the work of Grassroot Soccer, which provides insight into the social, economic, and cultural problems associated with AIDS, and what it means to live in a society shaken by this epidemic. GolTV will also contribute a share of its advertising proceeds toward this important cause, and calls on its advertisers to participate in this humanitarian initiative.

GolTV’s Founder and CEO, Enzo Francescoli, a former professional soccer player, emphasized: “We saw a unique opportunity to help millions of African children who, like us, love soccer. We simply could not let the opportunity pass or remain aloof in the face of the tragedy that is shaking that continent. We hope there will be others like us who will join this important initiative.”

Africa is the continent with the highest rates of AIDS-related morbidity and mortality. The Sahara region shares 76% of all cases reported worldwide. During the last decade, life expectancy in Zimbabwe dropped from 63 to 39 years. And, in Botswana, it is estimated that 90% of children between the ages of 15 and 16 will die of this disease before reaching age of 40.

“In Africa, soccer moves the masses, and star players are idols to children. This is why there is no one better than GolTV to help us reach more people. Beyond the money we raise, it is impossible to quantify the value of reaching millions of TV viewers in the United States,” said Ethan Zohn. “Now, GolTV will help us tell our story.”

Thanks to the fact that GolTV is broadcasted by cable and satellite providers such as Dish Network, Comcast, Adelphia, Cablevision, Atlantic Broadband, RCN and several independent service providers, close to five million subscriber households throughout the United States will be able to follow the work of Grassroot Soccer closely, and join the battle against AIDS in some capacity.
