Forty-four days, 215 miles, $75,000 raised, 2 pairs of shoes worn out and a ball lost — that is the score line for Ethan Zohn, who has arrived in New York on his dribbleathon from Boston to Washington to raise awareness and money in the fight against H.I.V./AIDS in Africa. Zohn, who won “Survivor: Africa” and $1 million, decided to start Grassroots Soccer after seeing the devastation caused by the disease when he played professionally in Zimbabwe.

“This is a huge undertaking; I underestimated how much work it would be,” Zohn said in a telephone interview from southern Connecticut on Sunday. “The funnest time is when I’m on the road dribbling. I don’t have to think about much, people are really supportive, and some driving by stopped and gave money.”

Zohn and his team of former players and celebrities, Grassroots United , will take on Hollywood United (which includes the actors Anthony LaPaglia, Brandon Routh and others) at the Sara D. Roosevelt Park in Lower Manhattan at noon Thursday.

“This has been a strain,” Zohn said. “I never really ran that much in my life. Hey, I’m a goalkeeper!”
