Two winners of CBS’s hit reality TV show “Survivor” will put their wilderness skills to good use tomorrow as they take part in a month-long effort to clean the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.
Ethan Zohn, winner of “Survivor Africa,” and Jenna Morasca, winner of “Survivor Amazon” - who are a couple - will spend Earth Day fishing garbage out of area rivers.
“I’m kind of an outdoors person, and I wanted to help make a difference on Earth Day,” said Zohn, who won a $1 million prize for “Survivor Africa.” Morasca was unavailable for comment because CBS prohibits two cast members from appearing in the same story.
The so-called Capital River Relief project was launched by 29-year-old Chad Pregracke, an Illinois native, on April 1. So far, Pregracke says, his seven-person crew and thousands of volunteers have removed 17,000 bags of garbage, including seven refrigerators, 12 shopping carts and 500 tires. The crew also found three messages in bottles and one mannequin hand.
Over the past seven years, Pregracke has collected more than 900 tons of trash from the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri and Illinois rivers. He decided on Washington after spotting tires and barrels in the Potomac while flying into Reagan National Airport about four years ago.
